Cooking with Kids: Making Playdo

I’ve often been frustrated with how easily store-bought playdo dries out, so one afternoon we decided we’d all make some together (good idea for an afternoon activity while it was raining).

First step was to pose in our new aprons

Then it was time to give Mum a greasy because you were over posing and wanted to get down to business

Next up it was time to chuck the mother of all tantrums because you didn’t think your apron was pretty enough (does it get any prettier than red and white polka dots?)

Take a few minutes to compose yourself…

…and then continue on with your tantrum by smacking your head on the cupboard..

I did put down the camera to give her a cuddle (just in case you were wondering !)

Ok. Onto the recipe. Lily found this recipe from Nicko’s Kitchen for playdo from youtube. Yes, that’s right… My 4 year old uses my ipad to look up recipes on youtube.

Measure 2 cups of plain flour

Add 1 tablespoon of cream of tartar

1 cup (yes, cup!) of salt

Add 2 cups of water and 2 tablespoons of vegetable oil and stir over a low heat.

Keep stirring the whole time until it comes away from the edges like this

Then take the mixture from the pot and knead for a few minutes.

Once you have kneaded the dough for a few minutes, press a hole into the middle with your thumb, place it on some baking paper and fill with some food colouring.

Put on some disposable gloves and knead in the colour.

So that is it! Very easy to make, a great afternoon activity to do with the kids, and the playdo doesn’t dry out (trust me, this has been left out over the house for the last week   )
