It’s Aussie Rules football finals time in Melbourne and excitement is in the air!! Especially at our house as my husband’s team is doing very well so far…
After seeing this cake on the Shauna Younge blog
I decided to make a blue ombre cake for my husband’s best friend… who just so happens to be a Carlton ‘Blue’ Football club supporter. Click here to see the yellow ombre daisy cake I also made and for a video tutorial on an Ombre Ruffle engagement cake click here.
…and the team song starts with “We… are.. the Navy Blues…’ so it all tied in perfectly!!
I started by making some white chocolate mud cake batter and then arranging my 6 bowls
Colour each bowl of batter so that you have the various blue shades
Line a 6″ baking tin and bake each colour separately on 160C until cooked (approx 20 minutes)
I baked mine a few days before the party and froze each layer.
I layered my cake using Italian Meringue Buttercream
And then ganached it and covered it with Navy Blue fondant
To make a more ‘masculine’ edging, I rolled out to sausages of fondant and then wound them over each other to make a rope effect. I then stuck it on using some water.
To make the Carlton FC symbol, I found a picture on the internet and printed it off.
I then mixed some tylo powder into my white fondant, rolled it out and gently traced the Carlton symbol before cutting it out (and yes… I know I missed a piece!!)
Leave it to harden on some baking paper for at least 24 hours.
I was so nervous with this cake – it’s always hard when you have no idea what it will look like once it has been cut!! Thankfully it worked out really well..
It was easy to spot who had eaten a piece
