I’ve found that a great (and easy) way to decorate cupcakes is to premake little toppers..
I’m making a cake for a friend’s daughter’s 1st birthday – the info I got was that it was to be really pink and girly, and there to be butterflies and hearts.
Because I have a busy week with cakes ahead of me (definitely a case of when it rains, it pours), I premade these toppers a few weeks ago. Although they look fairly intricate, they are actually really simple toppers – I made them all with cutters that I had.
I stamped out circles in fuschia and pale pink fondant (that I mixed with some tylo/tylose powder.
Using my ribbon cutter..
Using a small heart cutter, then stamping an A on a circle using my letterpress..
Using a small blossom cutter and then placing an edible pearl in the centre of each..
Using my sunflower cutter and using edible pearls for the centre..
And finally, using a butterfly cutter, with 3 pearls for the centre and dotting around the outline with a toothpick..
I let the butterflies dry in some cardboard before gluing them to the topper
There you have it
Cupcake toppers that look impressive, but are very simply to make – I think it took me about an hour to make these, so they’re not time consuming at all.

Wow – these are really gorgeous Bron…the butterflies look amazing.
These are so adorable! I think I may have a go at something like this for my daughter’s 1st birthday in a months time, thanks so much
