Apologies for the tardiness on the blog front… life is so crazy at the moment.
It’s funny how everyone was saying to me how much easier my life would get this year (Lily starting school, Ava in 4 yr old kinder and Molly in 3 yr old kinder), but at the moment i feel like we spend all day getting in and out of the car!!!!
I couldn’t believe it when I looked at my calendar last week and realised that Ava’s birthday was coming up this week…yikes!
Last year when I was making Lily’s birthday cake i asked Ava what sort of cake she would like and she told me a blue penguin cake
I wasn’t really keen on penguins (black fondant and I are not friends…), but every time after that when I asked her she would always she that she wanted a penguin cake.
I don’t know why I was so scared to make the penguins because when I eventually settled down to make them, they were surprisingly easy

(apologies for the iphone pics)
I made some simple cupcake toppers for the party, using the ruffle flower technique, a white circle and my new A cutter (I bought an alphabet set last week)
So… that’s Ava’s party cake sorted… but then, of course she needs a cake on her actual birthday (arghhh!). I’ve decided to attempt this lolly/icecream cake that I saved a picture of a while ago by English Cake Lady on Cakecentral.com
How gorgeous is it??!! I’m just going to make a mini version of it (I baked a 6″ and a 4″ cake with my leftover batter)
Here are the sweets that I’ve made so far (will add the lollipop sticks when I’m assembling the cake)
And then of course I need to bring something into Kinder (insert groan here)…
Seriously… birthdays are getting to be WAY too much work!!!!!! I think I need to plan things so that the party/birthday/kinder day falls on the same day
I’m going to make some cupcakes and the coloured flowers above will sit on top (I’ll add some edible pearls in the centre…if I can be bothered!)
So… this is my drying lid at the moment
God help my children if they knock anything over!!!!!

Lol they all look great Bronnie. Cant wait to see the end result with that cake (wow!) – I’m sure you will do a great job. x
You may end up exhausted by your daughter is going to love her cake(s). I’m looking forward to seeing the finished penguin cake. All the fondant work is so cute!
Bron, do you just leave things to dry out at room temp – so not covered at all?
Absolutely Nat! It wont dry if it is stored in an air tight container, so I leave it to dry on a lid in a cool and dark place

Excellent, thanks! Now I just have to find myself some tylo powder – guessing I can get that at the cake shop…?
Yep…I bought mine in bulk from the UK, but you can always get gum tragacanth, or tylose. Any cake shop should have what you need to turn fondant into gumpaste
xx
Your cakes and decorations are absolutely superb. I just love these little penguins. I tried my hand at the Gruffalo for my 2yr old Granddaughter’s birthday, it turned out well due to your excellent explanations of how to do things. I wondered if you had a tutorial for a standing horse, for my soon to be 4yr old Granddaughter. She does not like my little pony, but is mad about horses. How long does the Tylo powder keep for, is the use by date really relevant?
Hi Izzy
Thankyou so much for your lovely message! Much appreciated
I’m so happy to hear that your Gruffalo turned out so well! Unfortunately I have never done a standing horse – sorry for that! I’ve done a quick search and the only tutorials I have found are with the horse sitting down (makes it easier as you don’t have to have structure in the legs with a standing horse!).
I have never actually checked when my tylo expires. I’ve had my current tub for 3 years and it is still doing a great job!!
Hope that helps!
