How to make a Handbag Cake

Last weekend I had the pleasure of making a good friend’s 30th birthday cake. I had free reign on the cake design so decided to do something a bit different and try a handbag cake.

The handbag cake was made from 2 lemon mud cakes, torted with lemon curd Italian Meringue Buttercream. I decided to add a few bits and pieces in front of the bag that I thought represented the birthday girl, including a football ticket for her beloved Geelong Cats… (Edible image by Nancy from Cardique Cake Artistry)

A few polaroid photos (edible images on dried fondant) of the special people in her life…

…And a few other bits and pieces like a mini bottle of Passion Pop, a small basketball and a replica of a serviette that was used in an attempt to pick-up the birthday girl by an AFL footballer 🙂

I used chocolate fondant mixed with white fondant to get the bag colour, and for the contrasting colour I coloured white fondant with 5 parts egg yellow to 3 parts chocolate brown (Americolor brand).

    Hi! Really amazing work! Can i put my rolled fondant straight after i have polished my ganache or should i wait till the chocolate sets or firms up? How will the fondant stick to it though-a little brush of water or royal icing? Thank you so much for your help!
