I wanted to share a quick tutorial with you about how I made these cakes stands for Lily’s Decorating Party.
I wanted to do Lily’s party on a budget, so I went to The Reject Shop and purchased some craft glue, melamine plates and plastic cocktail glasses all for $15. Next stop was Bunnings where I purchased my spray paint in red and pink.
Step 1 was to glue the cocktail classes to the plates
I left my stands to dry for at least 24 hours before moving them outside and giving them two coats of spray paint.
In case you are wondering… yes I did get spray paint all over my table! It was such a windy day, but I was too stubborn and wanted to see how they were going to look

I set up the table for the girls and stood back and admired my handywork…

…and then I realised that this was a decorating party for 13 girls between the ages of 3-7 and that with all the reaching/grabbing for tools/decorating equipment they were bound to knock over their cake stand. Arghhh!! Upon reflection, maybe a shorter cake stand would work? But thankfully I had some red plastic plates which I used for the setup.
Maybe cake stands would have been good to use to feature the cakes once they had been decorated. Either way, I hope this tutorial will help you if you need a quick and cheap cake stand! For more stability, use a studier cocktail glass or candlestick as the base.
Hope that helps!

if you had turned your cocktail glass upstide down, keep the biggest part at the base your cakes stands would not tip over so easily. I use old candle stick holders found in op shops, and i notice the base is heavy. I think this help keep the top of the ckae stand balanced
Why didn’t I think of that??!!
Great idea Jeannie and thanks for letting me know!

They look lovely!
