My Craftsy Cake Decorating Course Review

I was thrilled to be asked to review an online cake decorating course from Craftsy.

Craftsy offers online crafting classes, taught by world renowned instructors who are passionate about what they teach. I chose the course “Cake Topper Techniques” which was taught by Anne Heap from Pink Cake Box.

This course took me through figurine modelling, starting with a basic baby in a pea pod, moving to a baby with limbs, to a sitting shild, a pregnant woman and finally a standing man.

Anne started off the course by running through some modelling basics such as the difference between gumpase and fondant and the best way to colour fondant to achieve difference skin colours.

Two of the best features about Craftsy are the ‘Ask a Question’ feature and the ‘Notes’ feature.

While taking the course you can Ask A Question to the instructor – the best thing is that the instructor actually answers the question!!!! It is also helpful to scroll through the questions that have previously been asked to clarify anything you are unsure about.

The ‘Notes’ feature enables you to write notes as you go along through the course. Given the course is always there for you to refer to, it is a really helpful feature to have available along with the bookmark feature to remember certain points of the course you might need to go over.

I think my favourite feature of Craftsy is the “30 sec repeat” function. I know that when I’ve watched tutorials previously, it has been frustrating to keep scrolling back to understand and follow what was being taught. Using this function you can select up to 30 seconds of footage and then it will keep repeating this section until you are ready to move forward. Brilliant!!

So – what did I make????

It was awesome whilst watching the course to see the uploaded photos of previous students showing their variations on the designs we were creating. You can upload your designs and ask for feedback from the instructor and students. At any time you can also engage in discussions with other students.

My course was broken into 9 lessons which meant I could go do a lesson here and there, in between driving the kids to school/kinder, sorting out dinner and all the other fun responsibilities I have 🙂 There was a lot to get through, so it’s definitely not something you’d do in one setting. Craftsy courses are online, so they are available to you anytime you want for as long as you want.

To be honest, I wasn’t sure how much I’d learn from this class…not that I think I am an expert 🙂 but I’ve done a bit of basic modelling through my tutorials and last couple of years designing cakes. However, I was completely wrong! I have never done a course on figurine modelling so it was really helpful to go through the basics and what I loved most was that each figurine built upon skills learnt in the previous lesson. It was nice to properly learn how to create different torsos, the neck and how to create the structures for a standing figurine. It’s not unusual for my figurines to have cracks, so it was handy to see how Anne had a small bowl of water and another bowl of shortening to use when she was kneading and shaping her figurines. And it was really helpful learning how to make clothes – something I’ve never really been able to master!

I’ve done a few cake decorating courses in person before and whilst it is fantastic to have the hands on approach and someone physically helping you mould your own design, it is really hard to absorb all that information and remember it!! I always find I’m exhausted after attending a cake decorating course so it’s usually a few days later that I try to refresh my memory and I have already forgotten how to do something.  A huge benefit is that I can always re-watch my Craftsy course when I need a refresher.
