Cake Bake and Sweet Show and a Cake Boss giveaway!!

I was lucky enough to attend the Melbourne Cake Bake and Sweet Show recently and so I took my ‘almost’ 8 year old Lily with me πŸ™‚

She was very excited to try out all the goodies! However one thing we did both notice was that nobody was selling cupcakes πŸ™ (Note to self: Maybe I need to set up a stall there next year!!)

I found some amazing suppliers while I was there including BoxdΒ who sell these gorgeous cake, cupcake and pie boxes

And these incredible moulds from Cakes by Ximena which unfortunately were sold out πŸ™

At the show, a team was trying to break the Guinness World Record for the longest chocolate bouquet

And another team was making a wedding chapel from cake! (I think a couple was married there on the friday!!)

There were some of the most fabulous cakes made for a competition – my favourites being these cakes (apologies for not having links to the talented creators)

IMG_7205(how cool is the chalkboard effect??)

The highlight of the day was of course a Meet & Greet with Buddy Valastro from Cake Boss who was just as lovely as he appears in his show. He was genuine, warm and so humbled by the success he has had.

Buddy spoke with us about his new range of baking equipment which he has created – a line of all the products he uses for his cakes – everything from the bakeware, to the decorating kits!

I have a range of products to give away as shown by my adorable daughter Molly, which includes the Cake Boss bakeware and some gorgeous Write To MeΒ letterpress recipe cards (this is such a gorgeous company run by two very talented sisters).

As I mentioned on my facebook page, depending on my mood I may through her into the prize pool πŸ™‚

For more of a description I’ve made a short video

Now… I’m not one who likes giveaways which require a creative response or a quirky poem so I will make it simple for you all. Answer the following questions by leaving a comment here on the blog (facebook/youtube comments wont count) and you will go in to the draw.

1. Which has been your favourite Bronnie Bakes tutorial to date; and

2. What would you like me to create for my next tutorial?

This competition is open to ANYONE, ANYWHERE in the world and I will be drawing it on Wednesday 29th October. Have fun!!!

1- favorite tutorial- so hard to decide, but a believe that great cakes need a great beginning, so covering a cake in ganache, to have a smooth base to create- so important!! But can’t go past the ruffle flowers too!!
2- what next- you always have something great that you come up with, but coming up to the festive season, I would love some mason jar dessert tutorials- as they are all the rage at the moment!!

    Thanks Bronnie!

    Hi Bronnie,
My favorite tutorial was the Peppa Pig tutorial!
I made my first 2 tier cake using your stacking a cake tutorial, ganache tutorial and Peppa Pig tutorial for my daughter and her best friends joint birthday pool party.
The cake was an absolute bit and so fun and rewarding to make!

I would love love love to see if you could create a chalkboard cake like the one above – how stunning is that effect?! It’s amazing!!
Looking forward to seeing more of your tutorials in the future πŸ™‚

My ALL TIME FAVORITE tutorial you have done is The Very Hungry Caterpillar Series. It was such an awesome tutorial and so detailed. My first cake with fondant was made by using this tutorial for my daughter’s first birthday and it was such an awesome looking cake.

I would love to see a tutorial for something whimsical and fun. Maybe a carousel or lemonade stand. Something nostalgic like. πŸ™‚

Love keeping up with your blog!

  11. Diane brennan October 15, 2014 at 12:28 pm #

Wiggles red car cake and would love you to do a stiletto shoe tutorial. I am always blown away by your work and tutorials.

  12. Lisa October 15, 2014 at 12:34 pm #

I loved “how to make the mini picnic/party food.” It was soooo cute! I love anything miniature like that. I would love to see a tutorial for something Asian themed – like little Japanese dolls for Girl’s Day.

  13. Andrea October 15, 2014 at 12:44 pm #

My favourite tutorial was the Cute Owl Tutorial. I used it for a friend’s daughter cake and it was a big hit. All your tutorials are fabulous and give people like me who are just starting out some great instructions.

As for another tutorial – how about something from Frozen or Lala Loopsy? If your girls are like mine, then they are singing let it go – allll the time! πŸ˜€ Haha

  14. Anna Peel October 15, 2014 at 12:56 pm #

My favourite tutorial has been for your Octonauts cake. Made it a couple of years ago for my son’s birthday and it has given me the confidence to keep trying new things. Thank you, I’m making your hungry cattepillar cake at the moment. Fingers crossed it will turn out just as well.

Was impressed with your Wonderwoman cake and would love to see more in the superhero theme… Batman, Spider-Man etc.

Thanks again for the inspiration and always being happy to answer questions.

  15. Jess October 15, 2014 at 1:21 pm #

    1. It is so hard to choose a favorite tutorial. I loved your basics tutorials on how to ganache and cover a cake in fondant! I don’t know how many times I watched those when I was doing my daughter’s birthday cake. I also really loved the ombre ruffle cake, hoping to make that one in the near future! I just want to also say that your tutorials are great in the way that you will just ‘make do’ with whatever tools or equipment you have, which makes it great for people who are just starting out. You’re not telling people that things have to be perfect or you have to use this particular tool!

    2. I don’t know what to suggest as a future…Would love to see a tutorial on another wedding cake. Maybe some more basics, adding stripes of fondant to a cake or how to do a gift box cake.

Keep up the amazing work! I love watching your videos, I have already learnt so much from you and cannot wait to learn more!

  16. heidi minor October 15, 2014 at 1:56 pm #

I absolutely love EVERY video of yours! But I loved the minnie car cake. As far as a future tutorial, I love how to ice a cake videos. But usually everyone passes over that cause they think it might be boring I however love the full tutorials on it, so I would love to see that. As far as a decorating tutorial I would love a buttercream/or royal flower cake like just piping of a romantic floral cake. Not sure if I explained that well but if not really anything u do I will love watching! As I am sure with most of your followers!

  17. Lisa Robins October 15, 2014 at 2:09 pm #

Gosh Bronnie, to pick just one favourite is difficult. I would have to say the Wiggles Big Red Car was my favourite tutorial along with the IMBC (you have converted me for life!!). I made the Big Red Car for my son’s 2nd Birthday and it was such a fun cake to make and it turned out amazing with special thanks to your wonderful tutorial.

I would love to see a tutorial for something that incorporates a glass dome like a gumball machine or a Christmas snow globe perhaps…

Love your blog and I also loved the Melbourne Cake, Bake & Sweets Show.

    • Lisa Robins October 15, 2014 at 2:12 pm #

Also, you haven’t linked the Wiggles Big Red Car back on your Tutorials Index page. I had to use the search to find it. πŸ™‚

      • BronnieBakes Admin October 15, 2014 at 3:07 pm #

Ooh – thanks for letting me know! I think I need to do a bit tidy up of my index page!!!

The ganache cake was my fav tutorial. I would love to learn how to do a camo buttercream cake. There has to be an easier way to create this pattern.

  25. Gemma C October 16, 2014 at 4:30 am #

    1. Although simple, your Italian meringue buttercream changed my baking! Made myself the yummiest caramel mud cake with caramel imbc for my birthday! It’s allowed me to have confidence to branch out to new flavours.
    2. That chalk board effect! I tried it recently using another tutorial and it didn’t work! Can you give it a burl and tell us how to create the effect!!

    • BronnieBakes Admin October 16, 2014 at 7:26 am #

      Thanks Gemma πŸ™‚

I have done chalkboard cupcakes before!

  27. Sandra October 16, 2014 at 5:42 am #

    Hi, Bronnie!

Well, I am a fairly new follower and so have so far really only followed one tutorial – the outer space cupcake topper tutorial, and I absolutely LOVED it!! My cupcakes turned out so well and the birthday boy (and his mom) were thrilled!!

As to what I would like to see next … someone else suggested LaLaLoopsy, and as that is want I call my granddaughter, i’d definitely be on board for that one!!

  28. Barbara Greenwell October 16, 2014 at 7:14 am #

The Wiggles red car was my favorite but to tell you the truth, I love them all!!! I would love to see more flower making tutorials. I love your videos and keep them coming!!!!

  29. Toni October 16, 2014 at 8:34 am #

My favourite tutorial is s tie between the yellow ruffle cake which was a saving grace when my friend wanted that cake for her 21st and I was stumped how to do it – you are the only one on YouTube with a good tutorial on it! And my other favourite is the mosaic cake because it was so simple yet so effective! I love all the tutorials so it was hard to chose favourites but those are it! Next id love to see more 3D cakes, maybe a Sesame Street series with 3D Cookie Monster, Oscar the grouch in a trash can etc! Keep it up Bronnie!

  30. Donna October 16, 2014 at 8:40 am #

My favourite is your penguin cake topper which I used to make several penguins for my son’s cake last year. I also loved (and have made) your fondant flowers so would like to see more of them if you could.

  31. Pamela Wooten October 16, 2014 at 11:41 am #

I really enjoyed the purse cake tutorial. You made it look easy and it turned out great. I would like to see a tutorial on making the power rangers mask cake stacked on top of another cake.

  32. Joanne October 16, 2014 at 11:47 am #

    2. I’d love to see something Peter Rabbit inspired, my son’s 1st birthday is fast approaching & I’m OBSESSED with it being Peter Rabbit themed!

  33. Adelaide October 16, 2014 at 12:51 pm #

As I am a beginner in decorating cakes, my favorite tutorials are How to layer, ganache & cover. I followed them to make a school bus cake for my 2 yr old daughter. A pokemon cake would be a good tutorial theme. Thanks!

  34. Trudi Verrico October 16, 2014 at 1:05 pm #

I love the entire list of your tutorials but especially the basics range and how to scollop your edges on the penguin cake.

I would like to learn Blinky Bill characters.

Thank you for all your hard work it is fantastic for newbies like me.
Oh and I am so jealous that your daughter got to go to Cake, Bake and Sweets

  35. Marica Skidmore October 16, 2014 at 2:36 pm #

    Hi Bronnie,

My favourite tutorial would be the “How to make an inside surprise cake” from May 9, 2013. – the Wonder woman cake. I have applied this technique to numbers for my son’s birthday cakes. Every-one gets a thrill and think I’m very clever to achieve this throughout the cake. He gets to choose the colour and flavour, so it’s a collaboration weeks before the day.

I’d enjoy seeing some simple Halloween treats or cookies for your next tutorial as my kids seem to love this theme. Otherwise superhero cakes, especially Spiderman please. You have Lego covered. I am partial to a surprise cake!

Thanks for all your posts – they are inspiring and achievable. Nice to see the kids involved too, just like my place.

  36. Jenna Lopez October 16, 2014 at 7:24 pm #

I loved your Peppa Pig tutorial which helped me make my daughters 2nd birthday cake and a friends daughter’s 3rd birthday cake. I would love more flower and pattern tutorials.

  37. Jacklyn October 17, 2014 at 7:05 am #

  42. Jessie October 28, 2014 at 3:53 pm #

    Hi Bronnie

I am SO glad to have come across your blog & tutorials a while ago! They have been great to watch and learn from πŸ™‚ I am still a beginner and still need heaps of tools etc so this would be the perfect prize for me!

    1. My favourite tutorial would have to be how to get the ganache on smoothly. What a great help that was! (closely followed by the ombre ruffle cake) πŸ™‚

    2. I would love to see a tutorial on how to do a 3D teddybear cake or some Christmas themed cakes πŸ™‚

    Jessie from Melbourne

  43. Jane October 29, 2014 at 6:23 pm #

Thanks so much for sharing so many inspirational ideas and the help to try and create them!
My favourite tutorial so far has been the hungry caterpillar one which helped me make a great cake for my daughters birthday. It of course couldn’t have been done without using your layer, ganache and cover tutorial also. I really enjoy making things for friends and family so thank you again for sharing and providing so many tutorials to expand my skills.

In the future I would like to continue to see more inspirational childrens cakes. I will be showing my children pictures of yours (that I might be able to do) for them to choose from! Really just looking forward to seeing what you come up with next that inspires you too.

  44. Caroline October 29, 2014 at 6:31 pm #

    Hi Bronnie,

I love all your tutorials, but if I have to choose one I think it’s your video on how to make baby booties, because I can’t wait to try it out! I’ve been waiting for an opportunity and am so excited to give them a go because you make the project look so doable, and yet they are so impressive and adorable.

As to what to show next… It’s hard to say because I’m always learning new techniques from you, whatever you decide to show! Maybe more 3D cakes because they seem to be all the rage now, and they’re much easier to master after watching someone make it first :).

Thanks for all your generosity of time in making the tutorials, AND your patience in answering questions on the blog.

(BTW, your daughter Lily looks EXACTLY like you, it’s scary.)

    Caroline from New York
