If you’ve ever used an instant pot, then you probably already know that it’s a pressure cooker that cooks food quickly. It’s also known as a “multi-cooker” because it has several different functions. But can you boil water using an instant pot? We will discuss this topic here, keep reading!
The answer is yes and no. Yes, you can use your instant pot to boil water but not all of the features are available for boiling purposes only. The reason why I say this is because there are other ways to cook with your instant pot besides just boiling water. For example: cooking rice or pasta in the instant pot. But if you want to boil water, then you should be able to do so without any problems at all.
This depends on what type of model you have. If you have one of these models below, then you may need about 5 minutes to get the desired amount of hot water. However, some newer models take less time than others.
The steps to cook water in an instant pot are listed here.
- Place a cup of water in the Instant Pot.
- The instant pot needs to be sealed shut and the lid put on it.
- The timer can be set for 5 minutes.
- Set your Instant Pot to high if it allows for high and low pressure.
- Allow it to run for a while.
- When the full pressure is reached inside the timer will start counting.
- When done, it will switch the settings to keep warm.
- Once it has been turned on the keep warm function, you can open the quick-release valve.
- The water temperature will drop during a slow-release when you let it sit.
- When ready to get into the water, remove the lid.
If you’re boiling 1-2 cups of water, use the sauté function on the Instant Pot. The high-pressure setting is good for 5 minutes when boiling more than 2 cups of water.
There are a ton of different program options for instant pots. They can be included, depending on your model.
Pressure cooking is the most common setting on all Instant Pots. You can use the +/- keys to change the cooking time, but older models allow you to adjust the pressure level.
The saute mode allows you to brown the food in oil just as you would in a skillet. It will heat up the insert quickly if you add oil and stir frequently. The mode is always used when the lid is off.
A keep warm low heat setting is used to keep food in the temperature safety zone once it’s been cooked using one of the other programs. When the Instant Pot cooking program has finished cooking, it will automatically switch to keep warm.
Yes, you can boil water in an instant pot without a lid. This works best when you don’t plan on adding anything else to the water like salt or spices. Just make sure that you seal the lid tightly after putting the water in.
You’ll also notice that the steam release button won’t work unless the lid is closed. So make sure you close the lid before pressing the steam release button.
It’s perfectly fine to drink boiled water from your instant pot. There isn’t much risk involved since the water was heated properly.
However, if you were planning on drinking the water straight out of the tap, then you might want to consider getting a filter system installed first.
It can take up to 10 minutes to boil a quart of water on the stove. In the microwave, one quart of water will boil in 3-4 minutes, and a quart of water using an electric tea kettle will boil in 4-5 minutes.
The Instant Pot is the clear winner for small amounts of water. Even if you have a lot of water, the Instant Pot still beats the stovetop.
To clean the inner parts of the Instant Pot, simply fill it with hot soapy water. Make sure there are no foods left in the cooker. Then rinse thoroughly under running water until the water runs clear.
Use dish soap instead of hand soap because some types contain chemicals that could damage the rubber seals around the valves.
After cleaning, dry everything well by wiping down any excess moisture. If needed, wipe again with paper towels.
Preheating the Instant Pot is optional. However, we highly suggest doing this step. Preheating helps prevent sticking issues while making sure that the internal components are at their optimal operating temperatures.
This process takes about 10 minutes. To start heating, press cancel twice. Once the display reads "Cancel" again, select the normal cook option. Press Start. After 5-10 minutes, the display should read "Keep Warm". Select Cancel again. Now select Normal Cook.
If you’re still having trouble, try turning the dial clockwise back and forth several times. Also, check the manual for more information.
