Can I use a steamer to bake a cake?
I need to steam it, but I’m stuck on what to do when I do that.
Is there a way to keep the steamer in the oven?
The best way to steam and bake is to keep a covered steamer in a well-ventilated oven.
The covered steamer acts as a reservoir for gas as it holds off any overflow. We do this all the time in my kitchen – I leave it in the oven with two glass bake dishes on top of it, one large and one small. I don’t use the microwave or induction because you don’t need a very hot oven for steaming so as long as the oven is below 175 degrees (see baking instructions).
Can we steam cake instead of baking?
Yes, you can even bake cake in your rice cooker!
Rice cookers are often used for cooking food in smaller amounts than traditional ovens, like breads and pastries. They aren’t suitable for baking cakes; the high temperature needed to bake cakes could cause a rice cooker to break, and also burns out the pot.
But if all you’re cooking is bread and dessert, a rice cooker could do it. Here’s how:
# 1 – Heat enough water (about 3-4 cups) in your bottom heating chamber of your rice cooker until boiling. It helps to have that much water because any extra heats up the contents of the cooker before they reach temperature.
If you add too little water or too much heat this won’t happen and will simply boil over itself!
# 2 – Fill an 8×8 baking pan or loaf pan with about 1/3 of your dried mix ingredients (rice flour here).

Why do bakers steam cakes?
In making cakes like layer cakes or sheet cakes one way we do this is by steaming them as they bake instead of baking them in an oven or even convection ovens where we could use hot air circulation which causes our cake layers shrink down too much when baked as well as being able to control how fast we want our cake layers done which takes time from our prep time before we even get started making our cake layers so instead we steam our cake layers so they stay moist but still have firmness with their texture similar as if they were baked with convection oven method except instead of convection oven method we steam them so they stay firm like baked but still moist enough without having those big shrinking problems while baking so that’s how bakers steam cakes . . . . I hope I was able help answer some questions regarding baking process . . .
. . Have fun!
🙂 Happy Baking!
Unfortunately no; however there is something called an air blette which does work using steam only..
Steamed cakes tend not cook evenly..and do not taste fresh.. but if used with care they can be nice.. as i say steamed cakes dont taste fresh.. but i think steamed cakes dont measurably affect gluten free products.. why not try some ovens with less moisture .. especially convection ovens .. as they tend not over bake.. but steam only ovens tend not over bake also.. You just need more trial and error!
