Passion fruit is the fruit of the Passiflora vine, a type of passion flower. The passion flower is the national flower of Paraguay. It has a tough outer rind and juicy, seed-filled center. There are two main types of passion fruit which I have never seen in my life, the purple and yellow varieties. There is a bit difference between purple and yellow varieties.
Passion fruit is a tropical fruit and as such its grown in tropical and temperate climates. Available in store pretty much all years round. Passion fruit is a nutritious fruit thats why gaining popularity in, among health conscious peoples.
You can find it when it’s not in season too, but it is still delicious.
Purple passion fruit are available throughout the year.
There are mainly two types of passion fruit. Yellow and purple passion fruit. Yellow takes longer to mature than a purple one. It’s more hardy and vigorous as compared to purple passion. The fruit is bigger and used for juice extraction.
Purple takes 60-80 days to mature and is available once summer starts. Produces better at higher temperatures. This variety has the best ever known nutrient and flavor content.
Granadilla. Its shape is elongated and with a lightweight feel. You can also see a smooth, firm, and thick rind that is green when young but it will start to darken into an orange yellow tint when matured. It’s pulp has a bright, sweet, tangy and fruity flavor.

A passion fruit is not the easiest to figure out if you’re not familiar with what it looks like when ripe and underripe. The white film separating the rind from flesh is edible as well, but don’t eat it, as it is very bitter in taste. This is an alien fruit for me. The taste is kind of sour, not as sour like a lemon.

6. Judge by weight and touch.
A smooth skinned passion fruit is not ripe. Avoid overly hard passion fruit which is underripe.
It’s also a little heavier because of its juice. They should feel heavy, which means they’re loaded with delicious jelly like juice that’s inside of these.
If you are looking for passion fruit in bulk, or ones for later usage, then you might consider purchasing versions that are not ripe. Unripe fruits are green in color. Although buying multiple unripe fruits might save your money, the fruit can spoil if you fail to store it properly. Smooth skinned fruit will ripen at room temperature within 3 to 5 days.
A common trait of bad passion fruit is a brown colored skin, which indicates that the fruit is overripe and past its eat by date.
There are, of course, certain health risks associated with spoiled food so always remember to practice food safety and enjoy your fruit before their shelf life has expired.
After ripening, this fruit can be kept for upto two weeks in the fridge. It will slow down the breakdown process and keep it cool. We all know sweet flavours are best when cold. You can also store it in a freezer. But make sure to put it in the freezer safe bag.
